What does this measure?

The percentage of the voting-age population (18 and over) that voted in an election.

Why is this important?

Voting is a basic right of all citizens and indicates the citizenry's interest, commitment and belief in the value of participating in our political process.

How is our county performing?

In 2018, 44% of voting-age people in Berks County cast votes in the election, slightly lower than the statewide rate of 49%.

During the 2016 presidential election, voter participation in Berks was similar to the U.S., at 57%, and slightly lower than the statewide rate of 60%. Since 2000, voter participation in Berks was at its lowest during the 2014 midterms, at 32%, slightly below Pennsylvania's rate of 35%.

During the 2018 election, voter participation was higher than Berks in Chester (59%), Lancaster (49%) and Montgomery (59%) counties. Participation was similar to Berks in Lebanon and Lehigh (both at 45%) and Schuylkill (43%).
