Share of Jobs by Sector, 2018

What does this measure?

The number of jobs in specific sectors, shown as a percentage of total jobs.

Why is this important?

The share of jobs by sector is a key indicator of the structure of the economy in a region.

How is our county performing?

In 2018, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities made up the largest sector of jobs in Berks County, at 18%, down slightly from 2001. Professional and Business Services comprised 14% of the total up 2 percentage points from 2001, while the Manufacturing sector was responsible for 14% of jobs in the County, down from 19% in 2001. Health Care and Social Assistance has grown from 9% to 13% over this period, while Government jobs maintained a 10% share from 2001 to 2018.

The United States and Pennsylvania had similar shares of Trade, Transportation, and Utilities jobs to Berks County in 2018, both at 18%. Manufacturing jobs comprised a substantially smaller percentage of jobs in the nation (7%) and state (8%).

Trade, Transportation, and Utilities was the largest sector in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties, while Professional and Business Services was the largest employer in Chester and Montgomery counties.

Notes about the data
