Job growth by sector is a key indicator of economic vitality, and reveals how the structure of industry and the composition of employment in the region are changing.
From 2001 to 2019, total jobs in Berks County increased 12%. Among the county's larger sectors, jobs were up 4% in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, up 32% in Professional and Business Services, and down 16% in Manufacturing. Health Care and Social Assistance saw the largest increase in jobs during this period, at 69%. Neighboring counties had increases in total jobs ranging from 3% in Schuylkill to 30% in Chester. Every county also saw large declines in Manufacturing jobs during this period.
